Today the Nomination 1 site mostly serves as the transit (walk though) zone, with occasional events in front of the Popov Monument. Building D (late 19th century) and Building 5 (mid 20th century) belong to the architectural heritage of St. Petersburg. Renovation of their facades and arranged architectural lighting will create a unique LETI atmosphere. Addition of “the venue” functions - information and comfortable stay facilities will increase the attractiveness of SPb GETU LETI as a place for work and studies.
"Entrance Space" was one of the nominations in the LETI Academic Spaces contest of 2021. Conceptual architectural projects of the finalists from the Higher School of Economics, St. Petersburg State University of Civil Engineering, Stieglitz Academy and Repin Academy can be used as the reference information for detailed projects.

The lobby of Building 5 is the main walk-through area with the largest flow of students, employees and visitors of LETI. Space for comfortable stay and hospitality amenities is limited due to the built in additions and inserts, which do not belong to the original design project of architects Leviash and Matusevich. Their removal will open the initial volume of the lobby and give more opportunities for exhibitions, communication and networking.
Peculiarity of this space is also in the different height of ceilings with light wells, underused "nooks and corners”. The lobby is occasionally used for temporary exhibitions, e.g. the university admission campaign, recruiting to student construction teams, etc., but it does not offer facilities for brief meetings of students, guests and employees.
In recent years, the Video conference hall of LETI Bld.5 has become a popular convention place, and not only for the university events, but for the citywide and international conferences. Its hospitality infrastructure is limited to the buffet zone around the hall itself, while the adjacent lobby spaces have a good potential for the congress infrastructure development. Primarily, it is the unused outdoor terrace with the pronounced LETI architectural identity and the staircases that can be converted into the amphitheater for lectures or presentations.

Courtyard of Building 1, bounded by the archway and unused exit to the Prof. Popova str.
The enclosed yard, originally designed for firewood storage, is connected to the LETI campus space by an archway and has unused driveway to Prof. Popova str. So the yard can have both controlled and open access. Easy public access (without key cards or passes) can be arranged by opening the Prof. Popova Street gate, combined with restricted access through the internal arch to the main LETI space. It is a good solution e.g. for admission campaign or city festivals.
Facades of surrounding buildings are protected by the St. Petersburg heritage regulations, but they can treated as the scenery for architecture & design solutions, which turn the yard into a multifunctional all-weather space for educational and scientific activities, conferences and festivals. Yard transformation into the indoor space includes provisions for engineered services and facilities (light, heat, water supply, etc.).

External boundary of the LETI campus from the Bld.1 end along the ironwork, which separates the project site from the recreational area of neighboring residential complex.
The site has a complex configuration, it includes the building of anechoic chamber located near the entrance to Bld.1 and passage to future sports playground, also other walkways between buildings of the auxiliary service and storage area.
This area is LETI's most neglected and unattended space, with limited exposure to light (orientation to the north, shaded by buildings). At this, it has a close vicinity to popular green spaces ("Forum" and "Vologdin Garden" of the previous contest). LETI is one of the most athletic technical universities in St. Petersburg, but its city campus does not have the outdoor sports playground. The space design challenge is to create a multi-functional area with comfortable atmosphere and facilities for sports and intellectual pastimes.
Nowadays the shabby service building of the 20th century houses the advanced LETI research laboratory the anechoic chamber. Its facades need both repair and new design reflecting the university’s research profile in dialogue with the built environment.
